How do I enroll in a class?

To begin, click on Basic RidingCourse 1 (BRC1) and fill out the registration form. You can also call our office Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm at, 760-987-6652.

What is the class schedule?

The Basic RiderCourse 1 (BRC1) consist of three, five hour sessions. They are typically conducted on Saturdays and Sundays. Depending on the schedule, they are conducted in a two or three day format. In the summer months we offer weekday courses depending on student demand.

The Basic RiderCourse 2 (BRC2) is one five hour session. We schedule this class once every other month based on student demand. If you have a group of four or more riders, we will schedule a private class for your group. Be sure to ask about our group discount! The Basic RiderCourse 2 (BRC2) does not qualify for the DMV license waiver.

What if it rains?

Bring your rain suit. We do not cancel classes for rain.

What if I need to reschedule my class?

Providing you give us enough advance notice to resell the seat, you can reschedule your class reservation with a $50.00 fee.

You have six months from the date of the original course date to complete. After six months, you will need to start over and pay the fees again.

What do I need to bring to the classroom?

  • A valid drivers license or permit and photo ID
  • A pen and a highlighter
  • An open mind

Can I get a copy of the student workbook before the class?

You will receive a student workbook at the beginning of the classroom that is yours to keep. If you would like to study before the class, the workbook is available to read online at the MSF website.

Do you give refunds?

We do not give refunds for not showing up. If you call the office and give us enough advance notice to resell the seat, we will allow you to transfer the reservation to a future class.

Do you provide a copy of the DMV Motorcycle Handbook?

No, but the website link is provided at "Links/Download" the PDF copy.

Will I need to go to the DMV after I complete the class?

Yes, MTS Inc. is and affiliate of the California Motorcycle Safety Program (CMSP). The DMV waiver (DL 389) we provide upon successful completion of the Basic RiderCourse 1 (BRC1), waives the driving portion of your DMV test only. You will need to hand carry the certificate to the DMV (DL 389). You will also be required to take the written exam at the DMV.

Is there an expiration date on the DMV certificate (DL389)?

Yes, there is a 1 year expiration date on the certificate.

Do I need to have a motorcycle license or permit to take the class?

No, a valid car license, permit, or completion certificate of driver's education.

How do I obtain my motorcycle license or permit?

Go to the DMV website for more information; or go to the "Links/Downloads" page.

Are there insurance discounts with course graduation?

Upon successful completion of the course, we issue a MSF completion card in addition to the DMV certificate (DL 389). Many insurance companies offer discounts with the completion of either the BRC1 or BRC2 courses.

What do I need to bring to the riding sessions?

  • Sturdy boots or shoes that cover the ankle; no spike heals, platforms or cloth shoes.
  • Full length denim pants or equivalent material; no holes, cutouts, sweats, or tights.
  • Full finger leather gloves that cover the wrist.
  • Long sleeve shirt and jacket.
  • Eye protection, shatterproof glasses, goggles, or face shield.
  • A DOT approved helmet if you have one. No half helmets. We provide full face helmets up to size XXXL if you don' t have a helmet.
  • Snacks and drinks to keep your body in top form for five hours in the sun.
  • A Folding chair for breaks.

Do you supply the motorcycle?

We provide a motorcycle for the Basic RiderCourse 1 (BRC1). A student may provide their own motorcycle or scooter manufactured for on-highway use providing it complies with two of the three following criteria as published by the original equipment manufacturer.
  • An engine displacement of 500cc or less
  • A dry unladen weight of 400 pounds or less
  • A seat height of 30" or less
In addition, student provided motorcycles or scooters must have proof of insurance and be mechanically sound and pass a visual safety inspection.

We do not provide motorcycles for the Basic RiderCourse 2 (BRC 2). The Above requirements do not apply to students providing motorcycles in the Basic RiderCourse 2 (BRC 2). However, they must be manufactured for on-highway use and pass a visual safety inspection.

What size training motorcycles do you provide?

The training motorcycles range from 125cc to 350cc.

Do I have to be a certain height?

No, but motorcycles do not allow for size adjustments like automobiles. You must be able to safely fit the motorcycle and operate the controls. While straddling the motorcycle, riders are required to be able to touch the ground with both feet and be able to hold the motorcycle up while stopping or walking.
